Christmas is coming and for many of us that means a chance to splash out on gifts and celebrate with family and friends. It’s also a time when we’re most likely to relax and put all our admin and bookkeeping tasks on the back burner.
But with important deadlines in the financial calendar looming early in the New Year, it’s important to plan ahead to make sure your books are in order ready for the start of 2018.
Prepare for payments
Towards the end of December, a number of deadlines arise which you won’t want to miss. Among these are certain corporation tax payments, clearance of student loan liabilities into HMRC bank account, and the submission of accounts to Companies House from private companies with end of March year ends.
Of course, the big impending date for the self-employed is January 31st 2018 when all tax returns must be completed and submitted. Failure to meet these dates can lead to penalties and charges, so it makes sense to get ahead of the game so you’re not put on the back foot when the January deadline arrives. Self-assessment can be a tricky and time-consuming task. Here at AMR, we pride ourselves on offering a comprehensive service so you can relax and enjoy the holidays, safe in the knowledge that your financial information will be ready for you to pass to your accountant in good time for the deadline. Be aware of changes Look out for forthcoming changes in the way HMRC accepts payment. From December 15th, the Post Office payment service will be withdrawn and from January 13th 2018, HMRC will no longer accept payments by personal credit card. Debit cards and corporate credit cards will still be accepted though, and you can still pay online or via telephone banking, or by direct debit.
