Case study: Akehurst Homes

Who is Akehurst Homes?

Akehurst Homes is a regional property developer building quality homes in Kent and Sussex. It’s a family run business formed in 2009 and since 2011 has been owned by James Lench, an experienced property professional and solicitor.  James has taken advantage of the difficulties that have been experienced in the housing market with the shortage of available homes by working to provide high quality housing within London and the South East of England.  The company will shortly be completing its latest project – 24 family homes in the wonderful village of Lenham in Kent.  The properties range from two to five bedroom homes and have been designed to blend into the local area.



How do AMR help Akehurst Homes?

JL: “We’ve been working with AMR since 2011 and they undertake all our bookkeeping requirements, which includes dealing with CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) payments, VAT and payroll.  We have been subject to significant scrutiny, but thanks to the efficient and comprehensive service we’ve received from AMR, no issues have been raised.”

How have you found the service you receive from AMR?

JL: “I don’t have any practical background in accounts management, so the service and the support that AMR give Akehurst Homes has been invaluable.  Due to the nature of our business, we deal with a wide range of subcontractors in the construction industry so AMR’s expert knowledge of CIS* returns – which can be extremely complicated – is vital. 

*CIS is HMRC’s way of collecting income tax from people who work in the building industry as subcontractors.

What do you see as the benefits of working with AMR?

JL: “They feel like part of our team and as they are local to us, it is easy to set up a meeting – and they are always accommodating.  AMR is also extremely efficient.  I have never had to chase them for information and, as legislation is continually changing, if I have a question, I will get an instant answer.  I would not hesitate in recommending them to other companies.”
